The Evans & Sutherland Freedom Series was the first full-feature 3D graphics system offered by Digital. It combined hardware accelerated texture mapping, hardware accelerated geometry processing, and superb visual quality.
The Freedom Series was packaged in an external box that connected to Alpha workstations through a PCI interface card and a cable.
While sales of this product were low (largely due to a price of $60,000-$110,000 for the graphics alone), it proved critical to the ultimate success of the CatEyes family.
The Freedom Series provided the opportunity to engage ISV's and to port applications, develop internal programs, tools and collaterals, and educate Digital sales and technical support people on the then-new world of 3D graphics. This provided a tremendous head-start for the CatEyes family, which was fully software compatible (due to OpenGL) and was a major reason for the strong ramp of CatEyes.
